The National Theatre is seeking young performers who have German or Polish heritage to share a leading role in The Land of the Living – a new play written by David Lan, directed by Stephen Daldry, in the Dorfman Theatre this Autumn.

We are looking for the following – YOUNG THOMAS: male, aged 10, white. Looking for a dynamic young performer to take on this challenging role.

Thomas is a quiet, thoughtful and brave boy who has experienced much in his short life. We’re looking for young performers who feel confident exploring a wide range of emotions and feelings.
Previous experience on stage is a bonus, but not essential.

Performers must have full availability across the following dates: 21 July – 2 November 2025

The role of YOUNG THOMAS will be shared between three young performers. Actors will have to miss some school to attend rehearsals and performances, but the NT will ensure all calls are in line with agreed minimum hours set by child employment regulations.

Candidates must ideally be native German or Polish speakers or have some skill with one/ both languages. We’re also happy to hear from those with a general aptitude for learning languages.

Rehearsals and performances for the production will take place at the National Theatre. All applicants must live within one hour travel time to the National Theatre (SE1 9PX).

If you fit the brief and would like to apply, please ask a parent or guardian to email casting@nationaltheatre.org.uk with “The Land of the Living – YP Open Call” in the subject line and include the following details:

  • Full Name
  • Age
  • Headshot or recent photo
  • Details of performance experience (if any)
  • If you speak German and/or Polish
  • Contact information

Deadline for submissions is Monday 3rd March 2025

If you have questions or would simply prefer to speak to someone, please contact us on casting@nationaltheatre.org.uk and a member of the Casting Team will be in touch.
