I am on a Traineeship in the Sound and Video Department. I have always been involved in theatre since I was 10 years old, getting more into the technical side at the age of about 14. I knew that I didn’t want to go to university to study Theatre Engineering, so I scanned the internet for opportunities that would let me learn on the job. This is when I found the traineeship advertised.
I work in all three theatres as a Sound and Video Technician; so far I have experienced two live broadcasts, one musical and two other productions. I have also been involved in many other shows, doing small jobs here and there. One of these involved me being taken to Manchester in order to record some audio effects at a velodrome. My best experience, I would say, was running radio mics on the NT 50 Years on Stage celebration, where I was involved in a huge variety of shows, the scale of which were incredible.
I aim to try all sorts of areas of sound throughout my career in order to develop my skills and discover what I enjoy the most. The support I have received here is definitely going to make me achieve this goal. My advice for anyone who wants to follow the same path, or a similar one, is to jump straight in. I have discovered most people in this and similar industries, will gladly help you along as you will be taking over one day.
