Making Theatre
-
Our 3 Theatres
At the National Theatre we have three different auditoriums, the Olivier, the Lyttelton and the Cottesloe.
-
Set and props: Design and Making
The workshops construct and paint large sets. Almost all of our props are made here on the South Bank.
-
Sound and Music
Sound effects and music can be very important to creating a really believeable world on stage.
-
Production Management, Stage Management and Stage Operations
Production and stage managers play key roles in developing the production through from rehearsal to performance.
-
Opening up theatre
Theatre is both powerful and enjoyable, so we want to make sure that our work is accessible to as many people as possible.
-
Front of House
The Front of House and Catering teams at the National provide theatregoers with a warm welcome to the building and range of important services.
-
Acting and Directing
Actors and directors work closely together in the rehearsal room, and then in the theatre, to craft performances which will need to be sustained for runs of several months.
-
Costume and wigs: Design and Making
What an actor wears has a major effect on the way that they portray their character and many actors wear a wig on stage.
-
Lighting, Video and Special effects
The way a set is lit can completely change its appearance. Video projections are now being used more and more, while traditional special effects also remain important.
-
Writing, experimenting and choosing plays
At the National Theatre we put on many new plays. A number of these are developed in the National Theatre Studio.
-
Management
There are lots of jobs which are vital to the running of the theatre which take place in offices round the building.
